Financial turmoil is the theme of 2025, and people are looking for ways to accomplish their goals and dreams cheaply. Users of free or low-cost AI services are growing daily, and self-publishing is more popular than ever. One of the biggest self-publishing platforms is Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). KDP reports that in 2023, authors published over 1,500 books per day, and it is now available in over fifteen countries.

KDP doesn’t just dominate self-publishing. Millions of readers subscribe to Kindle Unlimited (KU) for access to over a million ebooks at a low monthly fee, usually less than the cost of a hardcover book. Analysts have estimated that KU had 4–6 million paying subscribers globally by the end of 2023. Here’s how to optimize your visibility, page reads, and earnings on KU.

Optimize Visibility

How do people find your book on KU if 1,500 books are added daily? To be included in Kindle Unlimited, you must meet the KDP Select requirements and enroll your Kindle eBook in KDP Select. Readers will see an icon next to your eBook indicating it is available through KU, and they can visit the KU page to see the eBooks available. KDP Select allows you to take advantage of Amazon and Kindle promotions like limited-time discounts, free book promotions, and Amazon writing contests. You can purchase Amazon ads and campaigns for additional marketing.

The Amazon search algorithm is complex and evolving. KDP lists past sales history, availability, the length of time the book is listed on their website, and popularity as factors for search result ranking. There are recommendations to increase the probability of your book showing in KU’s search results.

Short title: Books with titles more than 200 characters long will not display in the search results. Category: Selecting the correct department and category can be key. Paperbacks and hardcovers will be under Books, but ebooks are listed under Kindle Store. You can specify your primary audience.

Keywords: Up to seven keywords are allowed, but the shorter the better. You’ll get better results when keywords are listed in logical order. Amazon’s example is “military science fiction” instead of “fiction science military.” Keywords that describe the content of your book are useful, like setting, character types, character roles, plot themes, and story tone. Keep the keywords consistent across book formats. Avoid ambiguous keywords, and don’t repeat information already listed in your book’s metadata. Marketing tools like Semrush, Answer the Public, and Publisher Rocket can provide more targeted keywords for your audience.

Metadata: Be sure to follow KDP’s guidelines for metadata. Another resource to check out is Kindlepreneur

To summarize, keep your title short, select the right department, and use trending keywords for the description and metadata. And promote your book on other platforms! You are not limited to KU for promotion. Other places are BookBub, Written Word Media, and Reedsy Discovery.

Optimize Page Reads

KDP pays by the number of pages read. The best way to maximize page reads is to write a good book, of course! I can’t outline every way to write a bestseller here, but I can provide some ideas.

Genre/theme: Pick a popular genre or theme for your book. Trending themes in fiction include post-apocalyptic worlds, FBI mystery thrillers, Western fiction (thank you, Yellowstone), shifter main characters, dark horror fantasy romance, and supernatural academies.

Strong hook: Attention spans are short these days, so your first chapter needs to grab the reader with a strong hook. Think about books you like to read and the techniques the writers used to keep you reading.

Book cover: Don’t skimp on an eye-catching book cover. Readers still get drawn in by the book cover on ebooks. Have a blurb that follows the formula: problem + hook + emotional payoff.

Create a series: Another reading trend is binge-reading, so having a book series will return more page reads. Add “book 1 of X” in the subtitle or series metadata.

Take the time to do market research, hire a professional where needed, and get publishing.

Optimize Royalties

How can you make money if KU subscribers can get books for free? KDP uses a system called Kindle Edition Normalized Page Count (KENPC) to standardize page counts across genres, devices, and display settings. You are paid for the number of pages read for the first time. Payments are made from the KDP Select Global Fund, which fluctuates monthly, and you earn shares from this fund based on the number of pages read. The more pages read, the more shares, which equals more money!

  • What’s a good KENP read-through rate?

    • 80-100% = Excellent (your book is being read thoroughly)60–79% = Good (might be some pacing issues or reader drop-off)Below 60% = Needs attention (could be a weak hook, mismatch in genre expectations, or editing problems)

-You can track this using tools like:

  • KDP Dashboard (Reports > KU Reads)ScribeCountBookReport

  • What are the typical KU payouts?

    • 2023–2024 average payout per KENP page: $0.0042–$0.0046-So, a 300-page book read completely = ~$1.26 to $1.38

    • In 2025, rates have remained relatively stable, hovering around $0.0044/page.

  • Should you price books differently if you’re in KU?

    • Yes — because KU readers “borrow” rather than buy, the pricing strategy shifts slightly:

Format

Suggested Price Range

Reason

Standalone eBooks in KU

$2.99–$4.99

Encourages impulse borrows & qualifies for 70% royalty

Box sets in KU

$5.99–$9.99

High KENP = high payout; priced to look like a “deal”

First-in-series

Free (promo) or $0.99

Drives KU read-through to sequels

Self-publishing is a journey on its own and paid for with sweat equity. The process can feel overwhelming, but take it one step at a time. If publishing with KDP is your path, be aware that they are exclusive. You cannot publish to other platforms at the same time. Kindle Unlimited is a powerhouse for finding readers and a fan base. You can optimize your book for KU to ensure maximum visibility, page reads, and royalties.
