I cannot count how often I have been reading a blog (mostly recipe blogs), and I have encountered elementary grammar and spelling errors. Nothing leaves a sour taste in my mouth more than finding grammar errors (which is awful because I'm cooking when reading recipe blogs). I always wonder whether they double-checked their work or had someone else do it. Blogging might not be considered a 'legitimate' profession by some people, but Growth Badger reports more than 600 million blogs across different platforms and 10% of the US population are bloggers. With that amount of exposure, it is important for editing to become as standard in blogging as it is in manuscript writing.
Importance of editing in blogging:
Clarity and Communication
Improves First Impression
Credibility and professionalism
Reader engagement and retention
Enhances SEO performance
Editing impacts everything from readability to audience engagement. If a reader is stumbling through a blog because of sentence structure, they will most likely not want to keep reading or subscribe. Editing can clarify the message to the target audience, and reduce the chance of miscommunication. Errors in writing will not entice companies to sponsor posts. According to Finances Online, one in three bloggers monetize their posts and 30% of consumers list quality content as a factor in credibility. Having properly edited posts contributes to quality content and makes a good first impression. An editor can help ensure that the content flows logically and maintains the reader's interest. Editing can also improve a blog's search engine optimization (SEO). While it might take a little extra time before publishing, it will pay off in professionalism.
